Carina Black is proudly the first retail and manufacturing company to contribute to the Mirasol Project. Carina Black contributes a percentage of every sale directly to the Mirasol Project, providing for the building of schools, educational, and nutritional programs for the children of the Puno region of Peru.

The Mirasol Project is a non-profit venture launched by yarn distribution companies in Canada, Norway, the UK, and the US, in collaboration with yarn producer Michell & Cia S.A. in Arequipa, Peru.

Michell produces yarn from the fleece of alpacas living at high elevations in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It became known to us that people living in the highlands of Peru have one of the lowest levels of education and personal health.

The first boarding school officially opened March 2008 at Mallkini, in the Puno region of Peru. Children who were previously unable to attend school due to harsh conditions -- normally walking two to three hours to school each way in severe weather conditions and at extreme altitudes -- are now attending school regularly. We have seen the wonderful work being done at the Mirasol School and it is our intent to continue to help make a difference in the lives of these children.

Furthermore, we have partnered with Diamond Yarn and undertaken the steps necessary to have the Mirasol Project recognized as an official charity in Canada through the creation of the The Mirasol Project Fund at Tides Canada Foundation.
